Long time no see. I just have noticed that I didn't post anything since December, however, I have started a few posts. I am sorry guys, but recently I really don't have time to write anything and when I do, then I prefer to spend time on my other hobbies. In January this year, I have been to Poland to participate in a knife sharpening and repair workshops, as a host.
I've got a collection of vintage knives that I have an end goal of rejuvenating. I don't want to re-handle if I can avoid it. I'd like to keep everything original if possible. I already have one knife where I took the handle off and I ran into the original rivet size seems to be unobatanium. I cannot find anything as large of diameter as the original rivets.

What would be the best approach for something like this old F Dick chef knife? My thought was very light sanding at fine grit of both...
What my real question is Has anyone got any good advise for someone starting out forging, for what types of metals to obtain and equipment that is helpful for the starting out process.
I am located in the UK if that helps narrow down supplies and shops etc.

I'm thinking I'll use standard 1/2 inch square tubing from Home Depot.
Not sure I will need the side brace tubing, but it's probably a good idea, which means some welding or other creative attaching.

In theory you should be able to create any radius you like based on the length of the tubing you use.
Draw and rough grind the radius squarely on your proposed...
Here's one example picture of russian made kitchen knife that appears to have machined finish:

No pics just yet... The resin is drying on a stacked leather & epoxy bolster to go on top of a simple mahogany handle for my first ever homemade kitchen knife. I probably should have stacked the leather and epoxied it onto the mahogany and then shaped it as one piece, but I had already drilled and test burned the tang into my mahogany and then cut it down at make room for this bolster (as an afterthought).
Thing is, I am going to have to get the bolster off to finish the handle(otherwise...

I have made some wa handles , some more basic than the others with just ferrule and recently some with metal spacers etc.
I shape them on grinder free hand then try to flatten them on my dmt xxc , then hand sanding and buffing . I don't have a disc sander , I am aware it will make things faster easier but it seems like I am spending 2-3 times more effort and time on them compared to my western handles and they still look not nearly half as good. And recently on top of that a wa handle I...

Basically, the idea is fully described in the topic. I wonder if it's something completely stupid or could work. I've never tried Sugru and ordered some out of curiosity. I'm not sure if it will work, but it should be rubber-like when cured, so might be an option for filling a tang hole. What do you think?

What's your experience with Sugru?

I'm planning on making a saya. Never done any type of woodworking before so I'm working on gathering things I'll need for this project. Since this will most likely be a one-time thing, it seems like such a waste to buy a whole can of tung oil or Minwax to finish it. The magnolia saya that came with my other knife, I'm pretty sure, doesn't have any type finish at all. But I got a thin cut piece of bubinga and some poplar for the one I'm going to make. The bubinga is lighter in color than I...
