250 by 54 Study in hollow grinding

Discussion in 'Brock Cutlery' started by Mark Brock, Feb 10, 2018.

  1. This is a hollow grind left/right on a convex base, fairly thin.
The hollow makes this significantly lighter than a standard convex grind, even a thin one.
It remains rigid though due to the think spine, starting at 3.4 mm with a full distal taper to ~1.7 two inches from the tip. A very interesting study for me. I can't wait to see how it cuts. Food release should be stellar.
This is pretty much finish ground on the grinder. I am debating finishing it just like this, maybe take it a bit finer grit on the grinder, and just clean it up a bit. The grind isn't quite cosmetically perfect, so may be a tester / pass-around. We'll see...

I'd be interested to hear what you all think about it.

I'd be interested in trying it out!
    Looking good so far

  3. Noted Marc. I am not sure what the fate of this knife will be just yet. I am pretty excited to get it finished and do some testing with it myself. I may very well pass it around after.
Might even raffle it off or something.

I am working on v2 tonight. I've learned a few things that I want to implement. I don't see a need to take that hollow all the way to the heel, nor the tip. Otherwise I like the height of the hollow in theory. Testing will tell....

Raffle or auction would be great.

Looking forward to the progression on the build. Looks very promising Mark.

  6. V2 of my hollow on convex grind. I love this!

Digging this approach....... can't wait to here how the food release is!

  8. Thanks Chef! I have been so sidetracked lately I haven't been able to complete either of these. I'm trying to head out to the shop now and finish the grinds. Maybe I can get a handle on these two by the weekend.

  9. It's also interesting to see the final result especially on the video.

  10. Do you have a large radius platten or wheel for putting in the hollow.

  13. I have a new designed drop point hunter that is giving me quite the challenge, but I do have one of these two almost done.
Butch, when I was grinding that I was thinking of your sweeping plunge video. It seems fairly similar in the grinding.

I do have a 14 inch wheel, but these were all done with the raduised platen. 36inch.
I ended up chasing the grind on that last one there a bit too far. It's still a usable gyuto, but it's thin thin!
The other came out very nice, and that is the first one up for finishing.

  14. Finishing this one up. 244 by 54 mm 52100 at 63 rockwell hardness. This is stabilized rayed Oak and Bloodwood with silver ingot spacer.
I'll give it a test in a day or two.

Let me know what you think of the grind, and the handle composition if you have a mind to.
    Thanks for looking!

Good grief, stand by while I fix that video.... Fixed!

Nice, Mark! I really like the combination of woods.

Are you looking for testers? :D

  16. Thanks Rick. I am wondering how that holey oak will be accepted. I like it myself, but I might fill those holes yet. Right now they are raw. And I haven't glued up the handle just yet either.

I am debating a pass-around on this one.
I'm not sure if I want to keep it, sell it, or possibly raffle it on IG. Thinking......

  17. This one is a wrap, finally! I got set back a bit but am getting back to it now.
This one is a pretty interesting knife. Very light with laser qualities, but it's a hollow on convex grind of course.
The handle holes were filled with black epoxy, matching the natural look, but no holes.

I am waiting for one response, but this one may still be available.

    246 by just over 54mm.
Full distal taper from 3.3mm to 1.8mm a couple of inches from the tip. Tip is thin.
