How is that little smoker to keep steady temps long enough to do those two roasts? Do you load up the firebox and then throttle it with the dampers, or use a little charcoal and keep adding to it?

These two webers are sitting outside on my apartment balcony, a performer, and a q220. Another weber go anywhere is in the storage.

  19. Moved last year and built a new patio last fall. Don't have pics of the grill yet, but we put in this oven.

It's not bad at all, if I pick the right day for smoking. On a sunny day with warm temps (probably no lower than the mid-60s) it holds pretty well. I start it with a chimney full of lump charcoal, throw in some chunks of (soaked) hickory, and then just watch the temperature and add more charcoal & hickory when the temperature looks like it might be dropping or it looks like it needs more smoke. A little tweaking of the dampers, but not much. When the weather's right, I'm only adding charcoal every 45 mintues or so. We normally have a nice light prevailing breeze, so I point the opening of the firebox into the breeze to get a little forced airflow. It actually seems to make a difference. I go through about 4 lbs of charcoal to smoke 2 butts like that for around 8 hours.

On an overcast, chilly day, it's a fight to get it hot and have it maintain, and I go through a lot more charcoal.

I had a vertical smoker with an offset firebox before my last move, and it was fussier than this one. This was just a cheap, small, easy way to get some smoked meat, and we've been pretty happy with it.
