nearly all makers i know grind the face flat to show more of the layers off but im sure you could find one that woudl leave the hammer marks. the coolest way to do this tho woudl be to hammer then grind flat then hammer again for lots of texture then bead blast then finish with an etch

Jon has the Gesshin Gonbei Hammered Damascus at JKI. I've handled a few of them. Nice knives. They etch well too.

More layers can show through. Or the colors between the steels contrast a bit more.

Does it lighten the light parts or darken the dark parts, or both. On something like this where the hammer marks have no damascus look to them Im not sure I would like it at all, or love the heck out of it, I can kind of get my head around the damascus area of the blade, its the blade as a whole i cant draw an image up for

You will like it. Partially depends on the number of layers too...
