Thrunite TN4A Flashlight review(PIC Heavy)

Discussion in 'EDC - What is in your pocket?' started by WarrenB, Feb 8, 2015.

  1. Well more of a diy review really, no amazing beam shots or anything you guys should make a purchase based on:D the beam shots look a little bluer than they are due to me messing about with the cameras white balance too much:Dave

I have a couple of small EDC flashlights that are great but I decided to see what these high lumen turbo things were all about.
I went with a Thrunite TN4A, I wanted to try something that could run on normal AA batteries as I have had ones that run on specialised batteries like the cr123a etc.

The packaging isn't bad at all, standard cardboard box with logo, well padded with foam inside, although no padding on the top. It comes with a nice holster, spare 'o' rings and a replacement switch cover.

The flashlight feels solid and very well made, the knurling is quite deep and provides good grip. One small issue is that it can roll on a flat surface until it gets to the switch area as that is the only flat section
    thru5.JPG

It's not really an EDC item unless you have it on your belt!! it's 111.5mm long and 45.5mm in diameter and at 338g with batteries fitted it's quite weighty.
Standard AA battery for size comparison

The LED is a CREE XP-L V6 in Cool White and it was perfectly centered in the reflector in my flashlight. The reflector looks quite deep and offers good beam distance.

The flashlight unscrews in the middle and it has a battery carrier for the 4 AA batteries. The threads fit together very well and were greased nicely, there is no pinching/scraping of the 'o' ring when you screw the 2 halves back together

I did find that the battery carrier was little tight getting the batteries in, not a major issue but maybe the springs could have been a fraction shorter. The carrier can be inserted either way around with polarity maintained.

The single button UI(User Interface) seems to work well. There is a blue LED in the centre of the button which I like.

Long hold from off brings you to the 0.5 Lumen moonlight mode.
    thrumoon.JPG thrumoon2.JPG

It has a memory function, so one press from off takes you to the last setting you had.

When on, press and hold to cycle through the settings.
    Low - 15 Lumens
    thrulow2.JPG thrulow.JPG

    Medium- 139 Lumens
    thrumedium2.JPG thrumedium.JPG

    High - 550 Lumens
    thruhigh2.JPG thruhigh.JPG

Double click when on takes you to Turbo mode
    Turbo - 1150 Lumens
    thruturbo2.JPG thruturbo.JPG

While in Turbo mode a double click takes you to the SOS/Strobe also at 1150 Lumens.

    The official specs are:

    Running on 2450mah NIMH batteries.

    Moonlight- 0.5 Lumens/80 Days
    Low - 15 Lumens/93 Hours
    Medium - 139 Lumens/14 Hours
    High - 550 Lumens/150 Minutes
    Turbo - 1150 Lumens/56 Minutes
    Strobes - 1150 Lumens/150 Minutes

    Peak Beam Intensity - 26640cd

    Max Beam Distance - 326m

    Impact resistant - 2m

    Waterproof to IPX-8 - 1.5m

    Length - 111.5mm

    Diameter - 45.5mm

    Actual weight with 4 Ansmann 2850mah batteries - 338g

I will get some night time beam shots added soon.

Overall I am very happy with the flashlight, solid construction, good range of outputs and the single button User Interface works well. The decent holster finishes the package off nicely.
It is not a small, light flashlight for EDC but I knew this when I ordered it.

The memory function is a good feature. I hate these fangled lights that force you to step through all its modes to get to the one you want. I like hitting the button and going back to the last setting. does it sense motion and turn on the blue LED to help you find the switch in the dark? Or is it only on when the light it on?

  4. Yeah I definitely agree the memory function is a good inclusion. The blue LED is only on when the light is on. Not sure how great a motion sensor would work as it would going on/off all the time when you move about, although maybe if it needed a good shake to activate it then it might work well. To be honest the blue LED looks cool but the switch is easy to find by touch as it's the only flat milled section on it.

great review, that flashlight is a little beast

  6. Yep it certainly packs a punch! not exactly sure how often I will use it as I got more out of curiosity, guess it's good for temporarily blinding intruders so will keep it next to the bed!
