I was at a huge folk arts and crafts festival today in NC and there were one or two vendors selling cutting boards. I got to thinking butcher blocks and cutting boards have to date as far back as knives. How were cutting board pieces bonded together before epoxy? For example, how would a Civil War era cutting board been held together?

Glue made from animal hides, hooves, and other parts. They were reduced to jelly, then dried, ground into powder, then remixed with water and heated gently in a glue pot.

Interesting. I was thinking the bonding would have been mechanical since you wouldn't want the glue breaking down if it got wet.

Probably why you would wipe and not wash a cutting board of that vintage.
