  2. I got a Spyderco Sharpmaker in 2010 and struggled futilely, on and off, for a decade. Along the way I picked up some sandpaper, inspired by the rec.woodworking Scary Sharp posts, which in hindsight we now recognize as an early pioneer at the intersection of sharpening, logorrhea, and community that can now be found on Reddit, on KKF, and on KKF.

My second attempt at mastering sharpening came in 2022: Covid hobby. This time whetstones: the Shapton Glass series from 220 to 16k; Chosera 400; Norton. This time it stuck! Also digital angle gauge, laser goniometer, and BESS tester for that extra WAF. Not to mention a bunch of shirogami and Blue Super and MagnaCut from MSicardCutlery.

Now I’m accidentally falling into a niche sharpening knives for private dining chefs in my city.

Some decades before KKF, I read a cyberpunk short story about a motorcyclist tech-nomad who carried a BBS server with him, hosting a online community who get very upset when one day he gets stopped by the cops and the server gets confiscated and shut down. I’ve been trying to find that story ever since, especially now.
