Petty repair

So a friend of mine sent me a picture of his petty that was used as pry bar

He asked whether I could repair it. I said I could try.

Upon receiving the knife I took few pictures:

Knife is 11 years old. While it's not very clear from the photo, scales actually separated from the tang and there's about a half mm of empty space.

Improper sharpening turned it into birds beak shape


And it wasn't a good pry bar. A bit bent tip with 15-18mm missing.


At first I was going to regrind tip and fix blade shape. Then I started to think about filling empty space between tang and scales with epoxy. But in the end I decided to make new handle.
It's not full tang knife, more like a half tang. Don't know proper term for such shape: it's when it's full lenght, but only half height. So it doesn't have scales, it has a solid piece of wood with a groove on top. I don't have proper tools to make such a groove, so I just converted it to WA. And here's the result.


Walnut Burl that I bought few years ago. The block was too small for a regular WA handle but was just perfect here.


I think I was so impressed by Don Nguyen latest gyuto that I unconsciously tried to replicate it. While not even close to what Don has made, this shape proved to be more comfortable than regular oval shape.

Polished with fingerstones to bring back contrast on the cladding. And then decided to experiment with etching. Core steel became black while cladding contrast hasn't changed. (strange looking thing on the bolster is just a reflection).


Sharpened and returned knife to original owner. He seemed pretty happy with the result and was debating over breaking his other knives if I agree to fix them

 

HAHA, I'm sure he meant that. The result was amazing, what did you use for etching? Ferric chloride and vinegar? The handle looks awesome, I really like triangular-ish shaped handles for parers.
