who likes a nice port after dinner?

    Occasionally I'll have a nice port and forgo the actual dessert. Much pleasure sipping while basking in the afterglow of a fine meal. What say ye?

    Have not tried the Ficklin. Tend to like tawny's with a bit of viscosity.

    Ooh. Man I wish I lived closer to you Jay, I'd find a way to invite myself over. Late bottled is the extent of my experiments. I know I'd have trouble letting them sit around long enough to become vintage. Do I recall correctly that the year on vintage ports is the year of bottling?

    Late bottled vintage ports are the best bang for the buck. They provide a large percentage of the pleasure of true vintage port at a fraction of the price. They're also ready to drink upon release, unlike the vintage ports that show best with 20-30 years of further aging.

    Unlike most wines, a vintage port is released in only "declared" vintages, when the production is worthy. Some will be better than others, of course ('63, '70, '77, '83, for example) but you'll never have a "lousy" vintage port. If only Bordeaux would do the same- we wouldn't have abominations such as 1980 and 1984 foisted upon us.

    I've had some magnificent Burgundy and some mind altering Bordeaux, but for sheer mystique, you can't beat vintage port.

    If that statement (from wikipedia) is true I would surely like it.
    I'm a big fan of Riesling.
