Meteorite Handle

Discussion in 'Terra Fern Handles' started by Moonbat88, Jul 4, 2018.

  1. IMG_20180703_173250_354.jpg Meteorite and bog oak handle. The video doesn't do it justice, but you can see the very cool hologram effect the etched meteorite has.
This was by far the most challenging, time consuming and expensive handle I have done by far. It was alot of fun and quite a great learning experience. I do have plenty of more meteorite left if anyone wants something made with it!

From what I hear meteorite is very heavy. Even just a small amount. How does the weight of the handle compare to other non-meteorite models?

  3. it is pretty heavy, i made sure to let the customer know it would be. its a good pound or so. which is 2 or 3 times what a normal handle is and i use dense and stabilized woods. I will have to see how bad the balance is once his knife gets to me. maybe its just going to be a safe queen. seems very impractical to have in a commercial kitchen.
im going to have the rest of my meteorite cut into 1cm slabs and maybe a 1" slab in case i want to make some ferrules with it. i cant imagine someone wanting another piece this large on a handle, for price reasons as well as practicality

  4. ill see if i can get a more accurrate weight on the handle soon.

That’s wild. Amazing how it can weigh so much. Looks really good!
It’s gotta be a cool bragging peice. “Check out my knife, meteorite in the handle!” Haha.

  7. i etched it twice with 2 separate acids. first was with nitric acid and the a second short etch wkth ferric chloride to give it a hologram effect.

  8. lol yupp, the meteorite alone on it costs around $200 just in the raw material
