Here's some of the Hiromoto AS knives that I've done the full spa treatment on. Some of the knives have been rehandled and the blades have been thinned & etched....

Wow Dave, very very nice again. I see you do the etching before setting a final edge? Could it be done in reverse order or would the etching affect the edge negatively?

The etchant detroys the edge quality, it actually removes material and the edge gets rounded over ever so slightly removing all of the bite. Lots of custom knifemakers do it in reverse though (that's sharpen & then etch) damascus knives because it looks prettier on display and there's less chance of screwing up the finish. I prefer to provide edge quality over looks.

Im with you Dave. I do prefer edge quality and cutting performance over looks. Thanks for explaining!

I loved this on my Mizuno. Still love it. Only difference now is sharpened a few times, and a little bluer. I couldn't believe the "clouds" on it.

I just finished up with this one. It's a 240mm Hiromoto AS gyuto that's been thinned, etched, and I installed a new custom handle made from some absolutely killer dyed maple burl from BurlSource. The handle is adorned with red G10 liners and copper pins.

The blade was a strange one, it was thicker at the heal and tip than in the middle. You just never know what you'll get with Hiros. [IMG]

This one belongs to Taro. [IMG]

Killer. I do enjoy the red spacers on this one. Lamination line is pretty wild too!!

If it makes you feel any better Dave has blank for the handle of my knife the will make it look like bacon. :bacon

If you're good while your waiting for your knife to arrive in 6 months or so, I'll let you and the kitty look at pictures of it. :D

Hiromoto AS Sujihiki with Performance Package (Thinned & Etched Blade, Rounded Spine & Choil, Sharpened)

This one came out pretty good for a suji.
