Mandolin - recommendations?

Discussion in 'Food and Drink' started by Khashy, Nov 7, 2017.

  1. Finally decided that I need a mandolin in my life. I have never had one so I'm not sure what to look for.

I don't want to spend a vast sum of money (I'd rather save it for knives), are there any 'value-for-money' mandolins that stand out?

I have had a look at the ones on JNS, not sure if they are any good.

    Thanks in advance.

The Beringer ones seem to be most popular. We have one of the small ones, and vastly prefer it over the much more expensive (and bigger) OXO.

The handful of restaurant kitchens I have been in all seem to have Beringers around.

I am afraid of them. So I can't make personal recommendations, but CKTG is offering an introductory price on one. https://www.chefknivestogo.com/masl.html

At 22 bucks it might be worth the risk to try it out.

You can probably shoot him an email inquiring about the quality.

  5. Thanks both.

So there really is no need for it to be the all metal body for a mandolin to be usable in a home environment right?

The plastic one we have has been in service (home use) for 15 or so years. I do not know what metal buys you, other then a higher price.

  7. My mom used one with plastic body for 15-20 years and the one I gave as replacement (Beringer) has been going for 3 years now. And she makes chips 3 times a week.

  8. Perfect, thank you

  10. +1 with Benriner ... you can't go wrong IMO ... I bought the replacement blade but 3+ years later I have yet to need it ... plus I can always just sharpen the one it came with ... LOL

  11. Benriner order placed. Thank you KKfora!
