so i got the chuck on the lathe and had a little turning time.
the bowl is walnut (was a friends tree stump i helped remove)
about 12 inch diameter and maybe 6 inch tall (had to guess at the specs as the bowl was gifted back to the friend that cut the tree down

  6. Totally into the lidded salt container.

  7. Butch, that bowl is killer. Sign me up for three salt containers! That could be my Mothers Day gift to my wife and my Mom. They'll just need to be patient :D.

i will farther look into the salt pots i see them listed 4" wide and 3 inch tall
what kinds of woods do you all like and is a lift off lid ok or need it hinge in some way ?

  11. Any ballpark idea on pricing? Hinge nice but not necessary IMO. I'm happy with any nice wood, especially if it's darkish in color.

Beautiful. I love salt pots...I like hinged. What about a wood like apple, or pear?

I would be interested in a salt pot as well.
I have one in bamboo where the lid swivels off to the side (it has some kind of pin at the pivot), and locks into place with a magnet. It's a nice simple design, and the lid never gets misplaced. It's just a flat disc, so it might be easier in that it seems like it wouldn't require as much precision as a lid that fits perfectly in the opening.
The walnut is nice, but there are plenty of nice woods out there that I might like as much or more.

    Ooooo! A salt box!

  17. I'd definitely be in for at least one (for me), maybe a few (for gifts) hinged salt boxes.

  18. I'm guessing it's this "small" one, it's 3.5 by 2.5 by 2.75. I think that is plenty large.
