I normally make my own sauce and it's pretty tasty but this year I'm looking for a change. Springtime is coming and that means several months of smoking and grilling at every opportunity. This year I'd like to branch out from my brown sugar based sauce and into something not so sweet.

    Any opinions?

I really dig mustard based BBQ sauces. They tend to be more tangy than sweet, for me

Here are a couple I enjoy-
    Hog wash

    2 c cider vinegar

    ¼ cup brown sugar

    2T salt

    1T red pepper flakes

    1T cayenne

    1 t lemon peel

    1 t chili powder

Mix, heat for 20 min, can, enjoy!

    South Carolina BBQ Sauce

    2T Veg oil

    ½ cup onion diced fine

    1 C mustard (prepared)

    ½ C lemon juice

    ¼ C brown sugar

    ¼ C white vinegar

    1t celery seed

    1 t salt

Cook onions until translucent add remainder of ingredients, cook until well combined. Stick blend and can.

Both can be used as a mop or as a splash on the side.

For store bought, Stubb's is a pretty darn good choice.

That's kind of what I was thinking of going for. More tangy.

Went to Dickey's BBQ yesterday and tried some of their "original" sauce. It's what I would classify as sweet, with a little heat, and it was seriously good. Don't know if they sell it separately.

The hogwash is a good base to experiment with. Add less sugar, use molasses instead extra heat.. Cannot go wrong

My absolute favourite BBQ sauce would be a Blackberry BBQ sauce.

    1/2 cup blackberry jam
    1 1/2 cups ketchup
    1/8 cup brown sugar
    1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
    1/4 teaspoon mustard powder
    2 tablespoons red wine vinegar

Mix all ingredients together in a mixing bowl.
    Makes 2 cups.

This one sounds nice and sweet. I'm going to play with the Hog Wash one from Jim today but I think this one is next
