200mm Extra Heavy/Extra Tall with Leather Saya for Sale

Discussion in 'CJA Edged Art / Scorpion Forge' started by CrisAnderson27, Dec 19, 2015.

  1. Alright ladies and gentlemen!!

In an interesting turn of events, @V1P just contacted me and asked me about making him a 250-270mm XH/XT gyuto. As some of you know he'd previously ordered a 200mm of the same type, and at the time was constrained by price to the shorter knife. Having seen Joe's 240, and Marc's 250, he's asked me if I'd be willing to take his 200 back in trade for the longer blade. He would like to keep his existing handle and have it transferred over.

I've agreed, and am giving him a full credit on what he initially paid for the shorter blade. What I want more than anything is for you guys to be happy with the end product!!

So, my reason for posting is this. I'm putting this blade up for sale as a 'stock' blade. As I said, he's keeping his handle so this would be sold as a fully customizable 'stock' knife...much like @James knife. The only real difference in this vs a 'full custom' is that the blade is hardened before you make the order. In practice there is no difference. The blade will be repolished, and a handle/handle style of your choice will be completed for it. It also already has a completed leather saya so that would have to be included.

Price for the blade with an octagonal wa-handle (I don't recommend this route with an XH lol), and included saya would be $950. Options include the single taper handle ($50), and dual taper handle ($75). Things like live edge handles and more exotic handle woods and spacer materials (ironwood, koa, bog oak, mokume, wrought iron, tru-stone, etc) are extra charges with pricing determined at the time of sale.

Probably the biggest benefit of this to a potential buyer is that its status as a 'stock' knife puts you right at the front of the list behind already 'in progress' blades. Right now that puts you two blades behind, and since all it needs is a repolish and rehandle, you could conceivably have your knife within just a few weeks vs 6mos to a year. Since my books are also currently closed (though I may be opening them again for a short while earlier next year), you will also have an opportunity that might not be available in the future, or only available in limited quantities.

Just some things to keep in mind when considering!

I'll get some pictures of the blade up here in a bit. Thanks to all of you for looking!

Hey guys. Like Cris said this is my knife! I have to say that I would never sell it if it wasn't for the fact that I can get a longer one lol. I've said as much elsewhere. If you have any specific questions for me feel free to drop me a PM, but honestly this blade is at the top of my list of everything I've ever owned. It's just too short for my tastes as I like longer knives. So please either get with Cris, or myself if you're interested and he'll get you set right up.

I'm going to chime in too and say that the only thing that held me back on this one is that I'm more comfortable with knives under 50mm in height. If I were more accustomed to taller blades, I'd have picked this one up to fast-track my own pending project.

Even with my height preference, I admit I'm a little tempted.

    Heck, I'm still tempted.
Just curious, what's the overall length of the blade, tip top handle?

  6. Lol, if you picked it up Marc, it would be kind of fitting since it originally started life as one of your 250 attempts :D. Ferry would have to measure it as I don't have it here yet, but the blade length heel to tip was right at 200mm if I recall. Add another 20-25mm from heel to machi for somewhere close to 225mm I would guess. I still have a piece of that mokume left too, so if we found a similar piece of ironwood you would have a nice pair :).

I measured and tip to handle is 230mm.

  8. Thanks Ferry!

For those of you looking, understand that that isn't really all that relevant to the use of the knife. Your middle finger still tucks up into the choil, and the heel is still in the same place relative to any other pinch grip. I've taken to keeping my handles between 110 and 120mm to allow for a more typical heel to handle butt length as well (all of the dual tapers are this way).

This video shows what I mean about grip etc, starting around the 1 minute mark.

Old thread, but I'm really curious where this knife is these days and who may be enjoying ownership. I'd like to possibly discuss an interesting trade for it as well?
