Wine, what's in your glass?

I've heard tales of your wine reserve Jay. It's quite legendary I gather.

    I haven't had a Mondavi that I don't like.

  2. You can do this but if you are anything like me the odds of being able to let it sit are slim.

If you want to go the aerator root there are heaps to choose from. I use a knock off Vinturi and it does an alright job. I however have given the proper ones as gifts and they work great. I know quite a few wineries over use then at their cellar doors.

I don't fancy myself a sommelier by any means. I mean....I bought this wine just cause I like horses so yeah...

This might be the first one I can honestly say does not taste very good to me.

But I'll let another glass make the final decision.

Always be careful when the wine has an animal on the label. They might be telling you where it came from.

That brings up a good question
I'm wondering if there is wine that is just for cooking? Or is any wine suitable for cooking and drinking.
What is the rule of thumb....anyone? Just go by price?

I did have a long face the next morning....

There are some wines sold as "cooking wines"--you don't want those. They have added salt and other nastiness in them. I've always heard don't use anything you wouldn't drink. For things where the wine is an important part of the finished product, like a wine sauce, I try to use one of our "everyday" drinking wines. Something we like to drink but isn't something we'd save for a special occasion. For something that you'd use to rinse out cans of tomato sauce to dump in spaghetti sauce and cook for a while, I'm not as picky--generally have a jug of Gallo or something for that. But I am uncouth and have been known to drink home made scuppernong wine out of a tin can.

  15. I'm getting ready to move house, so the booze cabinets are getting emptied a bit at a time (it's an adventure I tell you - some of that stuff moved in with me 12ish years ago!).

I found this at the back of a cupboard...

Not exactly in its prime, but it survived.

@Lucretia I'm sure it says on the bottle "cooking wine" or "for cooking" or something?
Or maybe it's not mixed in with the other wine?
Knowing me I'd grab a bottle and drink it not knowing!

Thanks! I should be safe then. Can't buy wine at grocery stores here (yet) and I highly doubt they would sell cooking wine at a liquor store.

    Gabbiano for the evening.

How does one start a wine collection?

Just start buying and buy more than you drink?
