Sue Moore Auction Donation!

Discussion in 'CJA Edged Art / Scorpion Forge' started by CrisAnderson27, Aug 31, 2015.

  1. So...I'd been intending to make a little EDC, or even a Kiridashi to give up for auction over at Badger & Blade for their Annual Sue Moore auction for the Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation.

And then I thought...it's a razor site!! Why not do up a razor??

    So I did!

This...is a Gold Dollar. They are inexpensive little Chinese razors that cost between $3 and $12 or so, including shipping most of the time. The thing is, they're pretty decent steel, with what seems to be a respectable heat treat. In addition they're easy enough to correct if warped etc, and I can literally regrind them if necessary for the worst issues. The grind is very nearly a full hollow from the factory as well.

All in all, a decent, inexpensive base for a renovation project!

So, this is what I had after a half hour or so. Clean lines and designed after my own aesthetic.

Another 45 minutes and the entire razor but for the blade and the top of the monkey tail were textured and ready for the next step.

...which I didn't take a picture of...but you can see the result here in the dark grey finish on the entire razor. You can also see the spalted...something...box elder maybe?...scales I whipped up. The pictures don't do the finish on the razor justice. It's a slightly irridescent grey/silver, and reflects light in the oddest manner. All in all really cool.

    Annnnd closed/open!

I'll be sure to post up finished pictures...but honestly guys, grab up ANYthing and head over to Jason's thread, which has a B&B donation link...then donate it.

Women with breast cancer around the world will thank you!

Completely transformed that razor! It would be great to include the before pic of the GD as well.

Folks won't believe it's the same!

  7. I'm happy to share whatever you guys like :).

Here's another, better picture of the finished razor post honing:

Do you guys think I should put my mark on the side? There is enough of the Gold Dollar markings (you can clearly see the circle and the '66' on the side of the tang) that it couldn't be confused for a custom.

I might even take a shaving video with it tonight, lol :D. I was reading the Gold Dollar competition threads over on B&B, and that's part of the rules right? I know this isn't part of the competition...but it's kind of fun to hold to the tradition for these razors :).

i say mark it... it's going to be labeled a Cris Customized GD, I see the GD, so i think i should see your marks too

  11. I was thinking that way myself James...I just didn't want to come off as taking general credit for the ($4) razor...if that makes sense, lol.

So how many days do we have left before the actual deadline for items?? I might just do an entire WIP for a full custom, and donate it...depending. Kind of something to go along with this little lady...but a bit bigger deal.

  15. I'm all about epic!! I'm on B&B...if you guys could point me to the area I'm supposed to post in? I've been tip toeing around there so as not to step on any rules/toes regarding being a maker and not paying for a vendorship...so I still haven't really found my way yet...lol.

no worries Cris, auction threads are made by Jason or myself so your off the hook on making it or breaking rules... we got this lol

  17. Should do a 7 piece week set of the Golden Dollars

  18. Good to know, lol!!

As far as the razor goes...I'm actually a bit impressed. I had an excellent shave with this thing tonight. Catie's Bubbles La Piment de la Vie soap, Brut after shave splash, and Monica Gillam's Van Yulay Harvest Moon balm. I'm sure a lot of it is all of the advice I was given from my shaving video I posted on Maxim's facebook page (only a couple of small cuts from bumps on my face...ZERO edge angle cuts), but the razor certainly didn't hurt. It fit nicely in hand, the balance was great with the scales (which I barely noticed), and the shave was one of the top three I've had yet.

I've also decided to up the ante a bit. When this item is auctioned off at B&B...I will be including with it a printed certificate (only redeemable WITH the razor, together) for a $500 custom razor. The certificate is good for the life of the razor (yes, this means if my razors are ever valued in the thousands, you can get one for $500), and is fully transferable. I don't care who returns this razor to me, or when...but if I'm still making knives and razors when they do, they will get the discount on a full custom.

Haha! Maybe!! Guys have been asking me all day how much I'd do one of these up for, and when I tell them $150 they get really, really quiet. One gentlemen won't reply at all!...and another told me he understood my reasoning, but that I should be asking more like $40. The fact of the matter though is that my work time is valuable like anyone else's. I spent six hours on this, and even if the wood only cost me $20 or so (which is unlikely...stabilized wood pricing from most vendors has gone through the roof), that's still only about $22/hr. Considering the fixes I did to the grind, and the overall profile adjustment for grip and ergonomics, this razor shaves very well now. If I took the mark off no one would ever know it was a Gold Dollar.

    I guess they didn't realize they weren't just paying for a $4 razor anymore...lol.

    ;)

  19. Yeah totally agree with your assessment Cris. It is why i have adjusted my knife purchasing regime to 1 good piece a year where i can afford to pay a good price where you makers are actually giving yourself a reasonable hourly rate/return for your work.

If you can't see the value in custom work why ask for it.

  20. Much respect my friend!! I agree completely, and not just because I'm a maker...lol.
