Pink western rehandle project

Discussion in 'Shop Talk' started by Geo87, May 12, 2015.

  1. Well I've been trying to find someone suitable who would want knives with pink handles for some time now without much success. Why? I don't know it just seems like a fun project lol.
I've got a new apprentice at work and I convinced her she needed new knives (tojiro dp gyuto & petty from James)

Now I've successfully convinced her she needs matching pink handles! :D

I need some help, where do I find pink scales? Any suggestion on materials?
Is there pink dyed burl or should I go a different route?
I'm open for any input or design ideas.
I was thinking pink scales with white spacers and one large mosaic pin in the centre with two smaller silver pins each side?

I'll do a WIP on this eventually but may take a while :)

  4. Search for "pink knife scales" on Ebay gave me a god choice from several shades of pink dyed wood.

You can shoot a pm to Mark Farley (Burl Source) and he may have some.

Arizona Ironwood usually has some dyed buckeye or maple burl in pink. This where I got this I think. IMG_0961.jpg

This makes me think of the Hello Kitty handle!

The 2 examples that have been shown are actually dyed red by K&G (Knife & Gun Finishing Supply).
It just turns out looking kind of dark neon pink looking.
They might have some dyed box elder in stock that you'll like.

  10. Thanks everyone :) the hello kitty handle was indeed the inspiration, that's exactly the shade of pink I'm looking for.
Of course I will shoot mark a pm first before trying the other sources mentioned.
    Thanks again!

  11. Thanks Chris, your not wrong that's quite the selection!

  12. I use them when I need odd colored blanks that Mark and Myron don't carry (or don't happen to have at the time). Things like maroon and weird greys. So far they've had what I needed every time.

Woohoo, I inspired someone :) I wish I could say the same of my students... The bright pink of the acrylic will be hard to find in natural material. Unless you find an unusual dye job, pink ivory seems like a good option to me.
