What do you think of a vegan butcher shop?

As someone whose brother recently became a vegan, this idea intrigues me. I'm going to try it out without a doubt. I guess on one hand I love meat way too much, but if someone can master texture and flavor and give me something that tastes great, then I am up for it.

And you better believe that at the midwest gathering, there will be some to try out.

What kind of wine did you drink tonight? That's just crazy. Never understood this. Fine if you don't like meat, but if you like it so much that you have to invent fake meat just eat the real thing, for heavens sake.

Well, from an economic perspective, if they are selling out their product every day and making money, it isn't crazy at all (for them). Now with that said, I would probably be in the same camp as you if it weren't for the fact someone close to me has converted to the V-word.

But just re-thinking meals has -- well -- me rethinking things a bit more in terms of being open alternative food. For instance, if someone offered a Spanish flavored, spicy vegetable terrine in a typical loaf form, I'd probably try it. But then having more or less the same ingredients and putting it in cylindrical form and calling it veggie chorizo would normally not appeal to me. So I admit some bias from my very meaty background -- but the kicker is, what if it tastes good? Just thinking, and this is why I throw it out there.

And my wine was a 2011 Sportoletti Assisi Rosso :) I also took some chugs of spicy pear Hanger One vodka out of a flask earlier ;)

I frequently enjoy these kinds of things...but I always object vehemently to the terminology. Chili/hamburgers--two pick two frequent offenders--are dishes that are by definition made with beef. However tasty it may be...there is no such thing as chicken chili or vegetarian hamburger. That concludes tonight's rant, thank you for your attention. Please try the veal.

How would you cook said butchered vegans? And is there such a thing as milk fed vegan?

As far as chili goes--gotta disagree on it being mandatory to make it with beef. Love chili verde with pork. And we don't even bother with beef chili at my house anymore--we just like chicken chili better. And we put beans it it, too.

Perhaps you mean Chile Verde? :)
Love Chile Verde. And chicken stew with chile powder too!

Why yes, I did mean chile verde. I know better than that.

No chile powder in my chicken chili. Cumin, oregano, chiles yes, chile powder no.

hahahaha...well, no Chile powder? then it's definitely not Chili. :)

I mean if someone want's to eat vegan food and make it look like meat — why not. Every man has his hobby-horse

I am not exactly a vegan but I sympathize with some vegetarian ideals, and regard myself as a hypocrite for eating meat occasionally. I like the idea of meat alternatives with a comparable taste and texture. All for the cloned/cultured muscle cell slime stuff too once it can be worked out.

That said, I'm not personally into the butcher shop idea because the look and experience of buying meat isn't what appeals to me...but definitely some people attach nostalgia or other value on that experience, even if the underlying concept is a bit repugnant.

yeah, I don't object to the products/dishes...in fact, I'm a fan of many of them...I'm just confused by the desire to co-opt the terminology...as a geek of several stripes, I place a lot of value on using words in a disciplined way. While I love Pooh, his manner of using words denies the objective of language.

    OK, enough communications philosophy. :)

Go after "irregardless" and I'm with you. Chili, not so much. Interesting article here on the history of chili. http://whatscookingamerica.net/History/Chili/ChiliHistory.htm

It's on the Internet so it must be true!

I can see where someone trying to go from a meat protein diet to vegan would want meat substitutes. And plenty of good reasons to follow a vegan diet. There are plenty of good reasons to eat animals, too. They're pretty darn tasty.

Great article Lucretia! Still no such thing as chicken chili though...perhaps, _perhaps_ Chicken Chilli though ;)

I think we are losing ground on irregardless though...there's now an entry...
