Mini vegetable cleavers?

Not too long ago, I was at a local store to pick up a decent Chinese slicing cleaver for a friend, and they normally come in three sizes: 180, 195, and 212mm. However, this time I went there they also had a model size: "small". Decided to investigate a bit.

(sorry for the rubbish pic, no time to set anything nice up)

Left is the big 212mm model, which has been growing on me though I'm more used to the smaller versions; middle is a Toshihiro nakiri 165mm with Anton handle that you can't see the awesomeness of here; and then the "small" cleaver, which measures 175x80mm and is very thin overall. It's got a little more curve to the edge than some like, but it feels pretty nice and seems like a fun little knife for small meal prep.

Anyone else come across smaller cleavers? Like them? I know 225+ is typical for most chukabocho folks, but just wondering if anyone else appreciates the little ones.

  2. I happened to discuss those cleavers with Robert before and wanted to share 2 more of his pictures, as they shows the geometry:

Blade thickness 1cm behind the edge. Sick!

i really need to find time to round the spine and sharpen it proper and get you some feedback (then mod from there)

Cheers Butch. Don't forget to remove the clear lacquer on it with acetone or something. At first I thought the knife OOTB was stainless completely until I realized it was coated. After removal of course, the edge patinas like you'd expect.

The mini feels very different of course because it's so small, but still seems like more than enough knife for most tasks.

Anton: the spine pic was from the 212...the small version is similar but less pronounced, so the extra comfort isn't as noticeable either. And for anyone wondering the 0.79mm is taken 1cm from the edge, and represents a pretty thin knife.

Didn't get any time but was able to snag my camera back for a few minutes.

With Takeda on top and Toshihiro on bottom, the small cleaver brings quite a bit of height and is comparably thin. Actually I'm surprised there aren't more people interested in these smaller ones, especially for houshold use.

I have a mid-size that I plan on having 'copied' as a custom. Middle knife below--this is a cheapo Shibazi. Kind of a slacker job on the thinning though :fp
    Cheers

How big is your Shibazi? The brand's obviously popular around China but I never see them here in Taiwan.

    length 195mm
    over heel 80mm
    over middle 81mm
    over tip 70mm

It was a very inexpensive knife (<$20 usd) and if it had decent steel and a handle you could grip when wet it would be nice.
