My dad used to make homemade pizza. It was ALWAYS a HUGE hit with everyone.

taco bell is road food cause all other fast food its really bad (i know taco bell aint all that great but least it feels liek its better ) as for pizza for corporate i agree papa johns but lucky for me my little bitty town has 5 pizza shops and one of them is good (i like there deep dish ) when we are out of town we liek to look for wood fired pizza joints
fav flavor bacon pinapple and red onion (kids love it too )
we have canned a bunch of sauce this year so alot of home made pizza will happen (more then in past years)

I will say that Tennessee does Southern food quite well. BBQ especially. But everything else is garbage.
Pretty much any BBQ joint is decent. And chicken wings. I have one BBQ place that I absolutely love and one wing place that is out of this world.

  4. For sure! My sauce is super easy too...get your favorite variety of tomatoes, cut them in half, and roast them directly on a high heat barbecue grill (sometimes I add green bell peppers, and mince them into the final sauce). I flip them one time during cooking, then put them all in a bowl and smash them. Pull the larger pieces of skin out, season with salt, pepper, and your favorite Italian spices. Insta pizza sauce. I use simple store bought pizza dough, top with fresh ingredients, and cook on a 14"x16" baking stone. I've tried cooking the entire pizza on the grill...but for some reason it always sticks :(.

I actually like Taco Bell too lol, more than most other fast food.

There are some very good restaurants in Nashville, City House comes to mind. Andrew Michael Italian Kitchen and the more casual Hog and Hominy in Memphis is killer, as well as Andy and Michael being great guys. I wouldn't say all food in TN is garbage.
As for Mexican in the south, Birmingham has great Mexican food, as do other agricultural areas in AL if you speak a little Spanish. Here in New Orleans most of our Latin population is Honduran so you can get great Honduran food, but there is only one legit Mexican place. Our big lack is all Asian food other than Filipino or Vietnamese. The Vietnamese food more than makes up for it, but some days I would kill for good Chinese food.

AFAICT, all the good Mexican joints in the South are in the Hispanic parts of town, there to serve them. The Gringo places are pretty much identical to what you described...remarkably consistently. The good news is, the good places are cheap and quite good...but typically in grocery stores and pretty grungy. Also, the staff may speak very little to zero English.

Everything I've tasted in Smyrna besides BBQ and Cracker Barrel has been blah.

I've been downtown Nashville a handful of times. BB Kings has an OK burger. Hard Rock Cafe...skip it unless you just want drinks. Merchants...will knock your socks off. Absolutely the best meal I've had here. I went upstairs for the more formal menu and ordered a 24 hour prime rib that was unbelievable.

Sorry you are so deprived JJ. As suggested most of what you're looking for is easy enough that you can prepare it for yourself with little trouble.

I have traveled a bit and I always try to stay away from soulless corporate food, finding a place with some love in the kitchen for the ingredients and the "eater" rather than the "customer " is key I think.

across the grain is the ticket. I made beef jerky back in 2013 with flank steak. I sliced it with the grain. It was some tough jerky!
    Lesson learned.

Skirt scrap tacos are high in my line lunch rotation. Merchant is another good choice in Nashville. Is Smyrna still a speed trap? They used to be famous for the radar gun.

Can you change that to 3PM, it will take me bout 12 hrs to drive there.

I've seen a few cops hanging out with radar guns so probably so. You can tell there is a police presence, they do their job here.
It doesn't stop anyone from speeding though, especially on any 4 lane highway. I do the speed limit - maybe 5mph over and I get passed by everyone.
