That's it! I'm sticking with Taco Bell

I'm an Illinoisan born and raised. Specifically near the Chicago area. I know a thing or two about good Mexican cuisine. Since I've moved to Tennessee I've tried 3 different Mexican restaurants and I've had 3 disgusting meals.
Today was strike 3. Look at this!

First of all I ordered the combo plate - one taco, one enchilada and one burrito. I asked if they could substitute steak for the beef since I had a feeling that the ground beef would be nasty. The waitress says "no, it only comes with beef". I said "can I pay extra for steak?" she says "uhhh I'll have to ask". I said..."You do have steak right?" she says "ohh yeah we have steak". Finally I just said I'll take the beef.

Well here it is. Nasty ground "beef". It looks like it came out of a bag and they just added water.

And I'm not joking when I say it was not seasoned at all. It was literally beef rolled up in a shell with sauce on top of the shell.

And the hard shell taco looked/tasted like one of those Old Elpaso shells from a box. I took one bite and threw in the towel. I don't get it! Everyone raves about how good this place is and clearly they have never tasted anything else.

There is no good Mexican food to be had here in Tennessee. I'm sticking with Taco Bell.

AND my brother ordered fajitas and it came with lemon on it. Lemon! Everyone knows you put LIME on Mexican food!

  3. Lol, I live in Phoenix, and we DO have good Mexican food. That said...go to Mexico, and you'll get something much closer to what you got there, than what we get here lol.

I think you've found your next business venture my friend!

That's pretty typical of all of the Mexican food south of the Ohio River. I hate it. The menu is the same at every single one. Let me guess, the lunch combo special #1 is the Speedy Gonzalez.

My very first experience at a Mexican restaurant here I ordered a steak burrito.
I was expecting steak, beans, lettuce, tomato, cheese, maybe sour cream....ya know the typical burrito ingredients.

What I got was steak rolled in a tortilla. Nothing else. Literally chopped steak, unseasoned, and rolled in a big taco shell.
It blew my mind. I couldn't believe that this was a burrito.

It's just a different culture of food down here that I can't get used to.

Not much quality Mexican or TexMex food I've seen in Taiwan. There might be something popular with the transient foreigners, but I'm not in those circles. We have other stuff so it's not too bad though.

Best Mexican food here in NYC is from the taco trucks not the restaurants. I come from Cali and Phoenix and the Mexican food is way better. I still prefer New Mexican cuisine better more chilies.lol

The problem is people have different definitions of what "Mexican" food is. Most people, who didn't grow up on Mexican food, associated "authentic" with "Tex Mex". That's why there are so many "On the Border, Hose Peppers, etc. places" Not that these places are bad, but they aren't going to satisfy someone who is looking for something authentic.

If you want authentic food, you're going to have to search it out. More than likely, you're going to have to visit restaurants in the ethnic parts of town. One of my favorite places, in my town, has a menu in Spanish and another in English. They offer dishes with cactus, brains, entrails, al pastor, carne asada and other things that let you know that you're getting something authentic. these restaurants in general, are very small and in some cases aren't the cleanest or most visual appealing.

Or, you could make your own authentic food. Taco's are extremely easy, and often very economical to make. Most grocery stores have fantastic ethnic sections. There are a lot of recipes online, and you can whip up a meal pretty fast ( I know you have a sweet grill :) ).

When I lived in San Diego, there were more Mexican food places than you could shake a stick at. From hole in the wall back of a house places to upscale Americanized places. It is greatly missed up here in the north. As Christopher says, the places up her are good, just not like those down on the boarder where the Mexican places represent the region from where the proprietors are from. Now if you get to Madison Wisconsin, don't hesitate to visti Tex Tub's Taco Palace. TexMex.

Out of all the corporate pizza joints Papa John's might be the best IMO. I won't eat Pizza Hut or Domino's.
I would actually rather have a DiGiorno's frozen pizza. Than any corp owned place.

  20. Honestly, decent pizza is so easy to make, I don't know why anyone bothers with buying from any of those places. My parents love Hungry Howie's...but when I make home made pizza (which doesn't take a hell of a lot longer...nor does it take any more effort than ordering, waiting, and going to pick up Hungry Howie's) for them, its gone as soon as I pull it out of the oven...and I'm no pizza expert.

    Ahh well, who knows lol.
