Nancy. I miss the goldilocks reference :k, but I miss a lot. I have no knowledge of the stove top smoker. I have broiled lots of fish in the oven broiler with good results. They don't compare to fish cooked on the Weber with some lump charcoal tho. Looking for a way to expose the fish to max heat and smokey goodness without loosing a bunch of it through the grate when it breaks apart and sticks to the grill.

Karring Can you speak about the differences between Oxo and Rosle and why the Oxo wins your heart?

  2. Don't laught but I've been using this little gadget for years. They make them in two sizes. Wonderful for the grill

Well, first off all the price. The Oxo ones are less than 50% the Rosle price. You could get a 16-inch and 12-inch Oxo tong for the price of one 12-inch rosle. [INSERT COMMENT ABOUT SPENDING THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS ON CUSTOM KNIVES HERE].

I also think the clever locking mechanism is overplayed a bit. Whichever brand you use, you will get used to and it will become intuitive and take little to no time to manage. The Oxo tong is one-handed for unlocking, but usually requires two to lock, so the benefit of the Rosle is really only to put it into the locking position with one hand. The disbenefit to the Rosle locking mechanism is that they will pop open unintentionally sometimes and you have to re-explain to your wife ever time she uses them how they work -- unless you choose to keep the instruction sticker on the handle.

Other than that, I like the rubberized handle on the Oxo. The Oxo feels a bit more nimble IMO and it is lighter. I also like how the Oxo doesn't close completely in the locked position. There is an inch or so of play, so you can still manage food and other grilling duties without ever needing to unlock it. I use them to lift the hot grill grate all the time to put smoking chips on the coals. The Oxo is more function in the locked position.

Lastly, the 12-inch Oxo ends up being an inch or two longer than the Rosle 12-inch due to the locking mechanism on the back for added reach on the grill, and because of the handle design I usually end up gripping the Rosle more toward the middle, which ends up placing my hand about 3 inches closer to the heat. I simply found the 12-inch Rosle too short for grilling and bumping up to the 16-inch rosle is going to run even more -- around $40.

It does work well. I have a stainless forged "Del" model I helped make at the ECG a few years ago. How about that for a group buy?

    Thanks
I will give the oxo a look. they are widely carried by many stores. Rosle not so much.

    Mucho Bocho

I have seen those before and thought they did look like a good idea for some things.
Jim the group buy sounds interesting to me.

  6. Goldilocks Syndrome (as applied to fish grills): The fish grill you bought to grill that nice big snapper you caught is just perfect. For the rest of your life you never catch another fish that size. It is always to big or two small for the grill grate you own.

Warning: this is both a product endorsement and something I sell in my shop! I like the Cameron Stovetop Smoker. Google will bring up lots of images and stores near you, where you can see them first hand, or buy one.

I probably use the Cameron the most for Salmon (with Alder chips) In the cold dark part of winter I often smoke pork ribs in the Cameron (with Hickory or Corn Cob chips) for about 20 minutes then finish them low and slow in the oven. Not as good as cooked over a real fire but it beats grilling in a top coat with a flashlight.

I have a full set of weber tools. Never use them.
The OXO tongs that won Drinkys heart? Well they won mine too. It's the only tool i use for meat and most veggies. I sometimes use a grill pan for smaller veggis, but really seldom.
I use a basket for fish. Had to hacksaw off the handle to make it fit inside the grill though.

The East Coast Gathering - where a group of maniacs gather with sharp objects and eat and drink. Pretty good time.

  12. I've used them all, and I have about 4 pairs of Oxo around. Love those things.

I decided to get a grill basket. after searching I found that many have handles which will preclude closing the grill. then some rely on a springy mesh to secure the food. This type I didn't like the idea of as the fish would be tensioned and I envisioned the mesh cutting into the fish during cooking. What I settled on is actually a rotisserie basket that can be used as a grill basket without the spit.

On the grill. I need to invest in a good set of tongs as the ones I have are too light duty to flip the basket. ended up using a pot holder.

Ready to eat. I found the basket to be a good tool for my fish. none fell through the grate from breaking up while turning. Came out pretty good. cell phone photos not great, sorry. they just make it so darn easy to manipulate the pics though.
