It seems to me the fashion has swung to a folding tactical knife and many of the knives in the EDC thread are of this more robust style. Had a dream last night that my EDC fixed blade was ruined. I pulled it out of its sheath and about an inch of the tip was broken off. The edge had several deep chips in it. The handle was nicked and scratched. I remember I was thinking “what could have caused this? There’s no way it can be fixed. Did my brother use it last?”

I don't want a hunting knife, I don't want a survival knife, I don't want a flashy "look at my knife" type of knife. I also don't want a crocodile dundee knife.

I simply want a basic, single edge (no saw blade, or serrated) knife. It will open boxes, cut apples, cut string, etc etc.

I'm not entirely sure what a good length would be or even what a good steel would be.
